Each breed is different depending on its size and weight. We recommend that small to medium sized breeds can transition from around 12mths of age and Large to Giant breeds from 18mths to 2 years.

Each breed is different, as is each individual animal, depending on its size, weight and activeness. There is an easy to follow guide on each bag of Black Hawk, and we have measuring cups to ensure standard recommendations. If you find you’re having issues with your animals putting on weight, or losing weight, use this as your guide to increase or decrease the amount of food.

Do you offer MasterBreeders support with their litters?

We sure do, as long as you have made Black Hawk purchases through your MasterBreeders account. Once your litter has been born, purchase a bag of Puppy (10 or 20kg) or Kitten food (minimum 3kg bag), keep a note of the order number, then complete the Litter Support Form here . Once processed, we will send you a replica bag of puppy or kitten food, plus Puppy/Kitten packs.

The litter support form should be completed within 3 working days of ordering your qualifying bag of Puppy/Kitten food (as shown on the form). There is a maximum of 10 Puppy/Kitten Packs per litter and all packs must be passed onto the new owners.

Do you offer MasterBreeders puppy/kitten packs for new owners of our puppies/kittens?

We have great puppy/kitten packs which can be ordered with your litter support FREE food. Each pack comes in a calico tote bag with a food sample, small gift for your new puppy/kitten owner, a voucher to purchase Black Hawk, and some information to help them with raising their new pet.

What are the sources of chondroitin and glucosamine and how are they added to the product?

Chondroitin and glucosamine are found naturally in the ingredients used in Black Hawk and are also added to the Black Hawk Original and Grain Free Dog recipes.  The meat, such as chicken meal or lamb meal is a source of chondroitin.  The added chondroitin is derived from beef cartilage and the glucosamine comes from shell fish.

Are the ingredients listed in the product by wet weight or dry weight?

We always use dehydrated mass in our calculations of percentage of inclusion of ingredients in our recipes.  All ingredients are dried and concentrated which helps them to withstand the cooking temperatures in the extrusion process.  Many of the ingredients included are prepared for us at our own plant in Queensland (Aristopet) so we are very confident in the quality.

Your packaging states that Black Hawk is hormone and GMO free. Can you substantiate that claim?

We work closely with ingredient suppliers to ensure that the specifications for our product are met.  This means we can guarantee that Black Hawk is GMO and hormone free.

What is the size of the kibble in Black Hawk?

The kibble size for Black Hawk is clearly marked on the front of every pack.

Are vitamins and minerals added to Black Hawk?

Where possible vitamins and minerals come from the food ingredients used in Black Hawk.  During the cooking of food some nutrients are lost, much the same as when we cook our own food.  These nutrients are added in via a vitamin and mineral mix to ensure that our pet foods are complete and balanced and will meet the nutritional requirements of the pet they are designed for.

People tell me that potatoes aren’t a good source of nutrients for dogs and that they are “fast carbs”. How come potatoes are used in Black Hawk?

Potato is an unusual carbohydrate source which offers benefits for people who are looking for alternatives to more commonly used grains and carbohydrates.  We use the potato skin so the additional nutrients from the skin, such as fibre and vitamins, are also included. Potato is an excellent source of energy.

Can cats eat dog food? How are cat foods different to dog foods?

Cats have unique nutritional requirements that are very different to dogs.  They are obligate carnivores and have a higher protein requirement than dogs at all stages of life. Cats should always be fed a diet designed for their species. Feeding dog food to a cat can result in severe and life-threatening nutritional deficiencies. Examples of these unique nutrient requirements include taurine, arachidonic acid, niacin (vitamin B3) and Vitamins A and D.

At what age do I change my kittens over from Kitten to Adult food?

We recommend at around 12 months of age.
